1. Define your research objectives-because one question may influence another, always proceed from the general to the specific.

2. Select the most appropriate method. This depends on the subject of the survey, the nature of the survey population and the research budget available.

3. Consider the sample population you wish to select.

4. Work out how to analyse the results- Determine if you need several questions instead of one.

5. Order the questions- Be careful that the respondents don’t neglect to state their most important reasons simply because they feel they are so obvious.

6. Design precise questions- Respect the respondent’s privacy.

7. Consider the page layout an attractive layout is especially important in a postal questionnaire, as it has a significant effect on the response rate.

8. Pilot the questionnaire.


Do's and Don'ts

Do:

Keep it short, to the point and easy to complete.

Stress that answers given are confidential and treated in confidence.

Minimise the nuisance factor for the recipient.

Don't:

Forget the "nuisance factor" for the recipient.

Say it will take 5 minutes if it will take 15.

Don’t use jargon or technical language.

Forget to thank respondents for their cooperation.
