1. Understand why people behave passively.

2. Understand how passive people react and that the behaviour can be deeply rooted.

3. Spot passive behaviour in your staff.

4. Start to modify passive behaviour by talking to the person about it and explaining how you can help.

5. Explain that the person has the right to refuse requests, make mistakes & ask for clarification.

6. Explain what assertiveness means.

7. Be a role model by acting assertively yourself.

8. Encourage the person and make clear your approval of assertive behaviour and your disapproval of passiveness.

9. Initially, aggressive behaviour can replace passiveness. Be careful to discourage this without squashing the effort to change.

10. Encourage assertiveness within the workplace through regular feedback on performance and progress.

11. Provide training & development.

Do:

Take the time to spot problems.

Remember that everyone is unique.

Explain that assertive behaviour is desirable & acceptable.

Continue to reinforce the message.

Don't:

Ignore the problem.

Just tackle the aggressive employees.
